Are Bengaluru’s Footpaths safe for women to walk on?
80 women RAN FIVE KILOMETRES on FOOTPATHS to find out!

What a morning it was yesterday! 80+ women from all over the city showed up at 645am in city centre (Langford Rd) to take part in a unique event – a 5KM Heritage Run, conducted only on footpaths. Incredibly, over 60 completed the entire 5km route (a few had to leave early due to time constraints, else they would have completed the route too!), and they were joined by 10 female BBMP employees who completed the 5km run.

We ran, we laughed, we stopped at heritage spots enroute where I shared fun stories about our city & the neighbourhoods we ran in, and most importantly, everyone had a fun time – nobody tripped and fell, nobody got hurt, and we managed a decent jogging pace as well. We also commemorated the female BBMP employees who were in charge of maintaining the footpaths along the route we ran on.

This unique run was conducted in collaboration with Sisters in Sweat, India’s largest community for women’s fitness and wellness, and with active support and participation of BBMP. This is part of the ongoing hashtag#BLRFootpathChallenge where we have walked/run and rated over 140km of the city’s footpaths over the past 3 months.
There are more such events on the way.
