How do you fit 180 people ON a footpath?

See the 20 pictures below to see how this was achieved – quite comfortably in fact, over 7kms. Well done Basavanagudi! Over 180 walkers showed up at 7am on Sat, Dec 14 to explore Beautiful Basavanagudi – on foot(path).

We walked through centuries of the neighbourhood’s history, and it was wonderful to have so many Basavanagudi residents with us, some who have been residents for several generations (including a former Dewan’s descendant) who provided fascinating anecdotes and stories as we walked by their familiar haunts.

We took a quick peek into the 250+ year-old Lalbagh (how can we not, even though it was off the footpath!) – see the pics below for some unbelievable group pics! We visited several parks and temples (known and unknown ones), walking on the main thoroughfares (and several bylanes), getting a good feel for the elaborate and exquisite urban planning of the 19th century and how it still works today. We discussed multiple philosophies, religious traditions, literary and intellectual histories and notable personalities, and how everyone had, and has, a place in the fabric of Basavanagudi. And much, much more. What a wonderful walk it was, ending at the iconic and revamped Gandhi Bazaar, which is now a walker’s delight (featuring a 10-lane footpath!)

It’s just overwhelming to see the large turnout everyday – all follow the rules, walk on footpaths, cross at zebra crossings and log their steps/kms as part of this massive city-wide 100km exercise to explore the city, assess the health of the footpaths, and also get a good walk workout of minimum 10,000 steps in the lovely Blr winter morning weather!

We have had over 1,200 walkers in 12 days, and covered 94kms – just 6km to go on the last day in Jatyanagar!
